Did you know that almost three quarters of students today are considered “non-traditional”?1 If you’re a nontraditional student, you may not have gone directly from high school to college, or you may work full-time and attend school part-time. You might have gotten your GED instead of a high school diploma or gone into the military before deciding to continue your education. Or, you might be raising a family.
At American National University, we know that the same factors that make you a “non-traditional” college student also mean you’ve probably had some life experiences. And we’d like to make sure you get credit for them!
Here are 3 ways we’ll give you credit.
1) Academics: You may be able to transfer credits from previous courses you’ve taken at other schools. College level courses, whether you’ve taken them at a postsecondary institution or even while you were still in high school, may be eligible. You may also be able to “test out” of some courses by passing exams that meet the American Council on Education guidelines.
"We recognize the value of experiential learning as a part of your overall educational experience."
2) Life experience: We recognize the value of experiential learning as a part of your overall educational experience. If you’ve had life experiences that directly relate to the course of study you’ll pursue, we want to give you credit for them. Meet with an Admissions Representative, Campus Director or Student Services Representative to discuss your experiences and see if you qualify. Responsibilities and experiences from a past or current job may be allowed, as well as training and seminars you’ve participated in. We review experiential learning on a case-by-case basis.
3) Military service: At American National University, we value the self-sacrificing men and women who serve in the U.S. military. If you’re a veteran or active member of the military, we will consider all of your previous education and training and try to give you credit wherever possible. ANU is a proud partner of the Concurrent Admissions Program (ConAP) and uses American Council of Education (ACE)’s recommendations on military training and other non-traditional courses. We are a Top 15% Military Friendly School and have a long history of supporting our military personnel.
