What Is an ECG Test?
An electrocardiogram (ECG) is a medical test that monitors the electrical impulses your heart produces. Electrodes from an ECG machine are attached to specific points on your chest, arms and legs. The machine reads your heart’s impulses and records them as waves with peaks and valleys which can then reveal problems with your heart.
Who Can Be an ECG Technician?
If you want to become an ECG Technician, you’ll need good communication skills, excellent people skills, and fine attention to detail. You’ll also need a solid foundation of knowledge specific to the profession. You’ll need to know how to perform the diagnostics to assess a patient’s heart rhythm and rate and record the electrocardiogram (ECG). Once you have trained at an accredited institution, you can sit for the National ECG Technician (NCET) exam administered by the National Center for Competency Testing. This professional certification assesses your skills and affirms to employers that you’ll be able to perform the tasks of your profession up to national standards.
Where Can I Find ECG Technician Jobs?
As an ECG Technician, you could work in hospitals, healthcare facilities, doctors’ offices and medical and diagnostic labs. You would be an important part of a medical team and your skills would be in high demand. ECG Technicians can expect much faster than average job growth through 2024.*
